Former Inter, Lazio, Feyenoord, and Bologna striker Julio Cruz believes that the Biancocelesti’s 3-1 win against Inter at the Stadio Olimpico on Friday was a massive statement for them.

Speaking to Italian news outlet Lalaziosiamonoi.it, the Argentine gave his thoughts on the significance of the result for the capital club’s season, noting the importance of getting a scalp like Inter’s early on in the campaign.

Lazio had gone into Friday’s match with some positives to take from their first two matches of the Serie A season, a chaotic 2-1 win over Bologna on the opening day of the campaign followed by a hard-fought goalless draw against a difficult Torino side.

However, they had lacked the kind of performance that would really announce the Biancocelesti’s intention to fight for the top four this season.

Not just the 3-1 result but also the nature of the performance seemed to show that Maurizio Sarri’s team can impose themselves against virtually any opposition, particularly at the Olimpico.

“When you look at the match that they played against Inter, I think it shows that they can go a long way,” Cruz said of the Biancocelesti, noting that in the Europa League “A lot will depend on the draw and which teams you play, it’s not like the league.”
