Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl has given an update on the situation of defender Manuel Akanji, a player who Inter have been persistently linked with.

Speaking to German broadcaster Sky Sports Deutschland, the Dortmund executive explained that there is still no decision on the 27-year-old’s future, but that he expects things to be resolved before the transfer window closes.

Akanji has been one of the players who Inter have been targeting during the summer transfer window, with the Swiss international’s contract situation at Dortmund marking him out as a possible bargain signing and his profile long having been admired by the Nerazzurri.

The Schwarzgelben never opened up to a move that would be feasible for Inter and so they have not signed Akanji this summer, but they could still move for him next summer should he remain at his current club this season and become available on a free transfer next summer out of contract.

Kehl spoke about the 27-year-old’s situation, stating that “At the moment there’s still nothing on the table as far as a deision. However, I expect that something will happen in the next few days.”

“We still have time until Thursday when the window closes,” the executive noted. “Although I think things will start to emerge tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, because closing on any negotiation would need the medicals and a few other things.”

“The fact that his future is still under discussion is certainly not an optimal situation,” Kehl admitted. “Manuel is a very good player who personally has not done anything wrong. But based on his statements and his early decision not to extend his contract we’ve opted for other plans.”
