Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the Nerazzurri made an error in sacrificing their usual style of play to bring in the more physical Roberto Gagliardini in midfield against Lazio in their 3-1 loss on Friday.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi gave the view that the Nerazzurri should have simply tried to play the way that they usually do against the Biancocelesti rather than using the tactical tweak of Gagliardini to add more physicality and energy against Biancocelesti midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Gagliardini had already been used in midfield against Lazio last season, so it wasn’t a complete surprise when the more physical and energetic former Atalanta midfielder was preferred to Hakan Calhanoglu in the starting eleven at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, it still raised a few eyebrows, and the 28-year-old played more or less the role he was expected to, following Milinkovic-Savic around and trying to disrupt Lazio’s possession game, not always successfully.

“It was a choice they made, but I think it’s usually wrong to change up your usual way of playing like that,” Bergomi said. “Although I wouldn’t put the blame on Gagliardini.”

“Inter is not a team that marks man-to-man like Torino, Verona, Atalanta, Milan,” he continued. “Inzaghi wanted more physicality in midfield, and we have to consider whether this is the right move, even if it means removing a starting midfielder in a head-to-head clash.”
