Legendary former Inter striker Roberto Boninsegna feels that the current Nerazzurri strikers will be very reliant on the midfield in order to have their best possible season.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Boninsegna suggested that midfield creativity and getting the balance right in the centre of the pitch and in buildup will be key to Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez’s fortunes.

Lukaku and Martinez are back together as the Nerazzurri’s starting attacking partnership after a season apart, albeit with the Belgian now set to miss out on a month or so with injury to delay a real return together.

In their first two seasons together, the two strikers had formed a formidable partnership and scored no shortage of goals, but there is no guarantee that their second stint together with the Nerazzurri will have similar success, and Boningsegna feels that the role of the midfield will be key.

Asked if the two can return to hit their former heights, he said that “It will depend a lot on the functioning of the midfield. I’d say that Brozovic is not a natural regista, he’s adapted to the position – my successful Inter had a classic regista in the form of Suarez.”

“There seems to be a lack of creativity, although there’s no lack of physicality, with today’s football being more physical,” he added. “Inter have very physically strong players.”
