Inter will have a tough precedent to come up against when they host Bayern Munich at the San Siro in their Champions League group stage opener on Wednesday.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who note that the Nerazzurri have lost all three of their three previous European meetings with the Bavarians at the San Siro.

The first meeting between Inter and Bayern at the San Siro was in the round of sixteen of the UEFA Cup in 1988, in which the Germans prevailed 3-1 on the night.

Then, in the group stage of the 2006-07 Champions League, the Bavarians again travelled to the San Siro to face Inter, and they came out 2-0 winners.

Most recently, the Nerazzurri hosted Bayern in the first leg of the Champions League round of sixteen in 2011, with the German champions winning by a 1-0 scoreline on this occasion.

Inter will be hoping that history won’t repeat itself this time around, but they will know perfectly well that they are in for one of their toughest tests of the season by far.
