Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is seriously considering leaving captain Samir Handanovic on the bench and starting Andre Onana in goal in his place in this evening’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the goalkeeping position is the coach’s one major selection doubt ahead of the match, and could be the first time he drops Handanovic for reasons not related to fitness or injury.

One way or the other, Onana is set to be given his competitive debut in an Inter shirt soon, but it could very well be as early as this evening’s match.

Inzaghi has been watching the Cameroonian in training, as he has also been watching Handanovic, and his thinking has increasingly moved towards already putting his trust in Onana.

The timing of a start for the former Ajax keeper would be significant, coming in a Champions League group stage opener against one of Europe’s strongest teams, whilst it would also send a major message regarding Handanovic’s place in the pecking order.

Should Handanovic start tonight on the bench, then the armband would be worn by midfielder Marcelo Brozovic for the match.
