Legendary former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli feels that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has made the wrong choice in dropping Samir Handanovic from the starting eleven for Andre Onana in this evening’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, Altobelli gave the view that making the change sends the wrong message about Handanovic, and also puts Onana in for his competitive debut in a very high-pressure environment.

Inter coach Inzaghi has made a number of changes to his starting eleven, five in total from the team that started against AC Milan in the derby over the weekend, but the most eye-catching by far is the absence of captain Handanovic.

Onana has not yet appeared in a competitive match, but the coach will put his faith in the Cameroonian, evidently believing that he will be the right man to inject something different into the team and steady the defense.

Altobelli stated that “It’s been a difficult week for Handanovic after the derby. He received too much criticism – he was and he remains a good goalkeeper, but it happens that his form is not at its best. Still, his quality isn’t up for discussion.”

“For me this is the wrong game to change goalkeeper, he continued, “if Onana struggles then you risk putting both keepers in a tight spot. Now it seems like Inzaghi’s listened to the press and to the section of the fans who criticized the captain.”
