Inter wingback Danilo D’Ambrosio feels that the team must focus on work and determination rather than talent to get themselves back on their feet after some poor reason results.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after this evening’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, the 33-year-old emphasized continuing to work and not giving up in order to re-find their form.
Inter had some encouraging moments against Bayern, but were largely second-best in a match which clearly demonstrated the difference in level between the two sides.
The Nerazzurri’s best moments tended to come when they were able to match the Bavarians’ energy and physicality, but this was not something they were able to do all match as the German champions overran them and created more chances on the whole.
Coming after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to AC Milan in the derby, this result will leave Inter doing some soul-searching, but for D’Ambrosio the most important thing to focus on is effort and mentality right now.
“We knew it would be a difficult match,” he said after the final whistle, “they’re one of the three main candidates to win it all. But we tried to make life difficult for them and create chances. However, if you give Bayern half a chance, they punish you.”
As to what Inter need to do to make up the gap between themselves and Europe’s absolute elite like Bayern, he said “I don’t know, I can say that you can reach incredible heights with work. You have to obsess over work, obsession beats talent.”
“We don’t give up,” he continued, “we’re not used to giving up and we want to do everything to achieve our goals. After analyzing the derby we understood that we could have won but we weren’t lucid enough. We’ll analyze this as well.”
