Legendary former Inter President Massimo Moratti feels that whilst the Nerazzurri are not currently in the upper echelon of European football, they can work to get there.

Speaking to Italian news service ANSA, as reported by FCInterNews, Moratti expressed faith that Inter can make up the gap on some of their top European rivals, and also gave the view that goalkeeper Andre Onana is a very high-level player.

Inter are one of the top sides in Serie A, but they are not widely considered to be at the same level among all the top European leagues, and are seen as being a notch or two below some of the top sides in the Premier League, La Liga, and the Bundesliga.

This seemed to be confirmed in yesterday evening’s difficult 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, in which the Nerazzurri fought hard but seemed to lack that extra bit of technical quality and energy that the German champions had.

Giving his reaction to the match, Moratti said that “It looked to me like Bayern were very strong, too strong for Inter, who were also not yet at their best physically.”

“It’s a moment that will have to be overcome,” he continued, “but it must be said that we’ve lost against high-level teams, not against the smaller sides.”

“Obviously, there’s work to be done,” Moratti noted, “in the league we’re still close to the top and we can still make up for it in the Champions League.”

Moratti also commented on the debut of goalkeeper Onana, saying that “He was very good when he needed to make saves, he showed great composure and calmness on his debut.”
