Inter defender Danilo D’Ambrosio feels that there needs to be some balance to how the team are talked about after a recent run of poor results.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the 33-year-old emphasized that the team were hardly perfect last season despite winning trophies, and conversely this season, are better than the results suggest, and that the discourse around them should reflect this.

Inter have now lost three matches after only six played across all competitions, with tough defeats coming against the three strongest opponents that they’ve faced in the form of Lazio, AC Milan, and Bayern.

However, the nature of the performances hasn’t been all bad, and there is a real sense that with more work as well as the necessary focus and determination, putting this moment of form behind them may not be as difficult as it seems.

“There are ups and downs,” D’Ambrosio noted, “we need balance. We’re not terrible now, and we weren’t phenomenal when we won two trophies out of three that were within our reach last time around.”

“We made some mistakes, but also showed some positive signs against Bayern, who are among the 2-3 favourites to win this competition,” he noted.

Of what needs to happen now, the 33-year-old said that “We have to put our heads down and work to get out of this difficult moment. The important thing is not to break down.”

Asked whether he thinks the team could still be experiencing lingering effects of the disappointment of the end of last season, D’Ambrosio replied “No, each season is unique. It would be a losing mentality to try and look for excuses.”

And of the suggestion that Inter have not been able to play well against teams that are on the same level as them this season, he said that “The only team who have been a step up above us have been Bayern.”

“Against Lazio and Milan we made mistakes, there’s the real regret. Tonight it’s not like we took to the pitch already beaten, we gave everything,” he concluded.
