Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his entire team deserved their 1-0 win over Torino in Serie A this evening.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, the coach emphasized that the result was something that the entire team as a whole worked to earn, and also explained the reasoning behind rotating between Samir Handanovic and Andre Onana in goal.
The win over Torino was hardly Inter’s most stylish or emphatic victory under Inzaghi, with the Nerazzurri needing until the last few minutes to find a way through after struggling against a Granata side who overran them in midfield at times.
However, the Nerazzurri never stopped believing, and ratcheted up the pressure particularly as the second wore on and they sensed that it was then or never to get three vital points in a season where doing that hasn’t always proved easy.
Inzaghi called the win “Very important, it was something we strongly desired, as a team. It came against a team who are hard to play against. We knew we would suffer, but we did it all together, including the Curva. I liked to see how we fought right to the end.”
“We wanted to get back to winning ways,” he continued. “We’re Inter and we always have an obligation to win. Bayern are very strong, it was not easy to prepare for this match in just two days, but I was pleased to see the team play with such unity.”
“We struggled but that was also because of how well Torino played,” the coach said. “Then at the end of the first half we made some changes, we stayed in the game, and we were hungry for the win.”
Regarding the goalkeeping situation, Inzaghi said that “We knew that Onana is good, but seeing him as the coach I saw that he’s even better than had been thought.”
“However, he knows that Handanovic is the first choice,” he continued, “I’ll evaluate who to start from time to time. The same way that I rotate all the players, there will be some alternating in goal. And Handanovic has a lot of quality as he’s shown over the years.”
Inzaghi said that “Wins give us self-belief. We have twelve points now and we’re growing, both as individuals and as a team.”
Of striker Lautaro Martinez, he said “Bravo, as with everyone else. In the first half we didn’t get clean passes to him and Dzeko, while in the second half we did better. Then I opted to give Edin a rest by putting on Correa. Lauti was very determined.”
And regarding the Nerazzurri’s next match against Viktoria Plzen, he said that “We and Napoli aren’t very lucky with the schedule. It will be a difficult and treacherous away match in Plzen.”
