Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the absence of a player like Romelu Lukaku is especially felt for Inter in the Champions League.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi gave the view that the Belgian is most keenly missed in European competition, as he was not available for the Nerazzurri’s Champions League group stage opener to Bayern Munich.
Luakaku will have been hoping that he could help Inter to get results consistently against all opposition in the league, but perhaps even more than that he will have been hoping that he could prove himself against the very best teams in Europe.
The 29-year-old missed the first opportunity to do so as he was out with a thigh injury when the Nerazzurri hosted German champions Bayern at the San Siro for their first group stage match of the Champions League campaign, and Bergomi feels that it was the kind of match where the team really needed him.
Bergomi analyzed the match, stating that “Bayern Munich aren’t a perfect team, but at the moment the difference is too great between them and today’s Inter, who are struggling.”
“You can see this based the choices that Inzaghi wanted to make,” he continued. “He tried to give the team a shock jolt, the team is afraid, and in my opinion is also still a way off their best physically.”
“On the other hand you see players like Sane, Coman, Mane, and Davies who have impressive speed, that’s what European football is about,” he added.
“Bayern accepted the one-on-one situation in behind,” he noted, “on any long ball, however, Inter could not get in behind. Lukaku’s absence is felt, especially in these European matches.”
