Former AC Milan and Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo feels that Inter’s squad is the strongest in Serie A in the moment, but that they lack the one decisive player who can open up the game through beating an opponent one-on-one.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, Montolivo contrasted the Nerazzurri’s lack of an outstanding individual with Rafael Leao at AC Milan, and suggested that last season it had been Ivan Perisic who was the player who Inter relied on to create dangerous situations.
The technical quality that is spread throughout Inter’s squad is hardly up for debate, although the team has always tended to rely more upon patient collective play to find their way through opponents in attack.
This season things have been difficult for the Nerazzurri on this front, as they have often looked out of ideas when it came to the final action to really get in behind opponents or disorganize a defensive structure.
Montolivo analyzed that “Inter have the strongest squad in Serie A, but they lack one thing – a player who creates numerical superiority. What I mean is, they don’t have a Leao, someone who can beat a man on the dribble.”
“Last season tt was Perisic, but he’s gone,” he continued. “Inter will continue to have this problem even when Lukaku returns.”
