Slovakian national team head coach Francesco Calzona is planning to put the candidacy of Inter defender Milan Skriniar to be captain of his national team up to the squad.
Speaking in a press conference, as reported by FCInterNews, the coach explained that he will soon ask the players in the team whether they feel that the 27-year-old is the right person to take the armband from Marek Hamsik.
Skriniar is one of the most capped players within the Slovakian national setup already despite being just 27 years old, and he is widely seen as a major candidate to inherit the armband from Napoli legend Hamsik, who is stepping down after retiring from international football at the age of 35.
No captain has yet been formally named for the Slovakians, but given Skriniar’s international reputation and his importance to the team as well as his leadership qualities, he would be a fairly obvious pick for the role.
Asked whether Skriniar would be made captain, Calzona replied that “I’m going to immediately ask the players who they want. If they say Skriniar, I will agree.”
