Inter captain Samir Handanovic is showing signs of being back at his very best, spurred on by the competition provided by summer arrival Andre Onana in goal.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who report that the 37-year-old looks to be recovering a lot of his alertness as he continues to fight for his starting spot with the first real competition he’s had since joining the Nerazzurri.

Handanovic has been the unquestioned Number One for Inter since he made his arrival from Udinese in the summer of 2012, with any other keepers at the club during that time having had clear roles as backups to the Slovenian.

This is not the case with Onana, with the 26-year-old’s arrival from Ajax signalling the long-term succession plan for Handanovic.

This does not mean that the captain has been displaced from the lineup right away to make way for his replacement, with Onana instead given a gradual introduction and Handanovic still holding down the starting place.

Nevertheless, the 37-year-old is aware that, with Onana having already made a couple of starts in which he has impressed, his place is under threat in a way it never has been in the past, and he is responding by bringing his level up to keep out the Cameroonian for at least a little longer.
