Former Juventus midfielder Giancarlo Marocchi believes that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is showing a lack of faith in players by always substituting off players who have been booked.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Marocchi argued that the players will feel a lack of trust from the coach when he makes it a clear policy to take off any player who has been booked.

Inzaghi has developed a reputation for removing players who have been booked, usually in the second half of matches, and he has explained this choice as being an attempt to avoid the possibility of seeing the team reduced to ten men.

The coach didn’t hesitate to remove Alessandro Bastoni and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as early as the second half of their Serie A loss to Udinese earlier this afternoon, and Marocchi feels that this evident worry about going a man down will transmit to the players who will think that their coach doesn’t believe them to be disciplined.

“It defines the players as irresponsible, which isn’t good,” he argued. “Being substituted because I’m playing badly is one thing, being taken off because I’m seen as being like an irresponsible child is another.”

“Players like Bastoni are already in the national team,” he added, “I would have been very upset.”
