Italian journalist Franco Vanni believes that the most damaging substitution that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi made in the team’s 3-1 loss to Udinese this afternoon was taking off Francesco Acerbi for Stefan de Vrij in the second half.

Reacting to the match in a tweet, Vanni suggested that the Dutchman coming on and giving away the corner from which the Bianconeri found their winning goal was an important factor in the result for the Nerazzurri.

Acerbi started his second match in a row for Inter and was one of their better performers on the night despite defensive struggles by the team as a whole, so it was something of a surprise to see the former Sassuolo and Lazio man taken off late in the match.

De Vrij came on to add some fresh legs in defense, with Acerbi perhaps struggling to see out the match due to limited match-fitness, but the Dutchman gave away the corner from which the Bianconeri broke the deadlock.

Vanni tweeted, “The substitution that hurt Inter the most was de Vrij for Acerbi. Obviously Acerbi had nothing left and there was no choice, but there looks to be a big difference between these two at the moment.”
