Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi has changed up the positions and personnel in the back three on any number of occasions, and for Italian media it’s a sign that he is lacking uncertainty on what he wants his approach to be.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who note that defender Milan Skriniar has played all three roles in defense already this season, sometimes within the same game, and it’s made finding continuity in the backline next to impossible.

Inzaghi made three separate defensive substitutions during the Nerazzurri’s 3-1 loss to Udinese over the weekend, and in each case the back three looked a little different.

First Federico Dimarco replaced Alessandro Bastoni who’d been booked, and then Danilo D’Ambrosio came on, shifting everyone one slot over to the left with Dimarco moving to left-wingback, Francesco Acerbi moving to the left of the back three, and Skriniar to the centre.

Finally, Acerbi made way for Stefan de Vrij, and Skriniar moved out left, and this was the backline that conceded both late goals that saw the Nerazzurri lose the match 3-1.

For the Gazzetta, it is little wonder that the Nerazzurri are struggling for consistency or solidity in behind when the coach seems insistent on changing things around so frequently.
