Inter defender Federico Dimarco has bemoaned the fact that Italy will not be at the World Cup in Qatar after victory over England, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking to Rai Sport after the match at San Siro, via FCInternews, Federico Dimarco spoke passionately about how well the Azzurri played against England in the game which they won 1-0.

“We played an excellent game, with personality, risking little. After a difficult period we took three points in this stadium and we are happy. The icing would have been the goal, but the important thing is to have won.”

It was a victory that relegated England to League B in the UEFA Nations League and kept Italy’s chances of winning the group that also contains Germany and Hungary alive.

Federico Dimarco was one of the better performers on the night but he could not hide his sadness that Italy did not qualify for the upcoming World Cup.

“It’s a pity we didn’t play in the World Cup, we could have had our say.”

He stressed that the team is very young at its core and the victory over England will help them to build as a unit.

“Winning helps to win, we are a young group and this victory will help for the future.”
