Former Lokomotiv Moscow and Slovakian national team defender Jan Durica believes that Inter defender Milan Skriniar does not quite have the qualities necessary to lead Slovakia from the back despite his defensive abilities.

Speaking to Slovakian news outlet Futbol Pravda, via FCInterNews, Durica contrasted the 27-year-old with a player who had been an influential player for Slovakia’s last generation, former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel.

Skriniar has been named as the team captain for Slovakia, with Napoli legend Marek Hamsik having stepped down from the role this year, leaving a vacancy for the armband for the Slovakian national team.

The Nerazzurri defender is certainly one of the most high-profile and well-regarded current Slovakian internationals, whilst he has also emerged as something of a leader on the pitch for Inter which makes him a natural candidate, but for his part Durica is doubtful.

“I don’t see a leader,” Durica said of the Slovakian team at the moment. “Milan Skriniar is one of the best defenders in the world at the moment, but he doesn’t have the leadership qualities of a Martin Skrtel.”
