Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that yesterday evening’s Champions League win over Barcelona must only be the start of a real comeback in form.
Speaking to InterTV after the match, the coach emphasized that while a result like that can be the spark for a real return to form for the season, the real work has only just begun.
Inter were virtually desperate for a result going into yesterday’s match, with their miserable record of four wins from eight in Serie A and five from ten across all competitions not at all what they’d have hoped for.
It was just about the toughest match in which to seek a result, but Inzaghi’s team managed it.
A gritty defensive display was enough to see out a clean sheet which along with Hakan Calhanoglu’s first-half strike meant that the Nerazzurri got a badly-needed victory.
“We wanted to give the club and the fans an evening like this,” Inzaghi said afterwords.
“It must be the beginning of something,” he continued, “it has to give us self-belief because we have so many matches to come on the horizon.”
“We had a match of intensity and determination which was needed because of how strong the opponent were.”
Of the clean sheet, the coach said that “It’s a good sign.”
“In the second half we went through a period where we were defending deep in our own half and missed the final ball on the counter, if we’d found that we could have scored a second.”
“The return fixture will be difficult, but first we have to face Sassuolo,” Inzaghi noted.
He stressed that “We have to follow up on this.”
