Inter are “back from the dead” after their 1-0 Champions League triumph over Barcelona yesterday evening, but the real turning point has to come over the weekend.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who argue that the victory was enough to breathe life into the team and show that they’re not ready to lie down, but that as far as a sustained recovery from their early-season crisis the real work is yet to be done.
Inter badly needed a sign that they can pick themselves up following their wretched form over the first few weeks of the season and that’s exactly what came yesterday evening.
It was not a perfect match against a strong Barcelona team, but it was certainly proof that the team can fight and stay switched on for ninety minutes.
This was an important indication for a team who were desperate to prove that the vital signs are still there.
However, what it was not was a real recovery given that, when all is said and done, the Nerazzurri are still eight points back in Serie A following a start to the campaign that could generously be described as inconsistent.
On Saturday Inter face Sassuolo, a chance to start picking up points and consistency in their league campaign.
They go into that match a team with renewed vitality after their victory over Barcelona, but at the same time start from zero, and they must begin the real work of actually rebuilding their season.
