Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is aiming for this evening’s Serie A match against Sassuolo to be the turning point that launches a strong run of form leading into the World Cup.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who report that the coach wants it to have the same effect that a match against the same opposition did for Antonio Conte.

Inter had also had a rocky start to the 2020-21 season under Conte, but that all seemed to change around the time they faced Sassuolo.

A 3-0 victory away to the Neroverdi seemed to announce that the team had found the right balance, and from there they never really looked back.

Inter won the title that season, and this is still clearly the ultimate ambition for Inzaghi as it had been for Conte.

The coach wants to emulate his predecessor by making the match at the Mapei Stadium the one in which the inconsistency of the start of the season is finally banished.

Clearly Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Barcelona pointed in the direction of a turnaround for the season, but it didn’t help Inter’s predicament in the league table.

However, Inzaghi is ready to try and make the Mapei Stadium the proving ground for his new re-tooled Inter.

The coach feels that if the team can keep the momentum from their midweek victory over Barcelona up this afternoon, then they will be able to show strong form all the way until the World Cup break.
