Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi told his squad that the choice to start Andre Onana in goal in Serie A was not necessarily a permanent and irreversible one.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, who report that the Nerazzurri coach made clear that there is still an open competition for the starting place in goal in the league.

Onana made his first ever start in Serie A against Sassuolo yesterday, and the sense is that this was an important milestone for him as he vies to become Nerazzurri number one.

The Cameroonian had been trusted in the Champions League, but until yesterday there had been a strict alternation where captain Samir Handanovic always kept his spot in the league.

As such, Onana starting into the league looks like another big step for the 26-year-old to stake his claim on the starting spot.

However, Inzaghi made very clear to both he and Handanovic that just because the Cameroonian started against the Neroverdi, it does not mean that he is expected to be the automatic starter in Serie A from here on out.
