Roberto Gagliardini could start in midfielder for Inter in their Champions League group stage clash with Barcelona tomorrow evening.
This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the 28-year-old could play as a mezzala in the midfield trio if Henrikh Mkhitaryan is used further up the pitch.
Mkhitaryan started as part of a midfield trio alongside Hakan Calhanoglu and Nicolo Barella in the reverse fixture against Barcelona.
However, against the Blaugranas tomorrow it is quite possible that the Armenian will instead be used as an attacking midfielder behind Lautaro Martinez.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi only has Martinez and Edin Dzeko available to him for senior forwards, and could decide to start Dzeko on the bench.
If Mkhitaryan is used as part of the front pair, then Gagliardini would be a prime candidate to start as part of the midfield trio alongside Calhanoglu and Barella in place of him.
