Former Lazio, Juventus, and West Ham United striker Paolo Di Canio feels that Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella is a much more effective player when he isn’t distracted by remonstrating with his teammates.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Di Canio noted that Barella seemed to have more of an edge in front of goal now that he looks more focused and driven.

Inter’s early season poor form was marked by frequent displays of frustration amongst the players on the pitch, with Barella being arguably the worst culprit.

As part of the team’s shift in approach to get past their early crisis, they have renewed a focus on each player simply putting his head down and focusing on his own work.

This has benefited Barella in particular, as the former Cagliari midfielder has been everywhere on the pitch and shown his quality throughout recent matches.

Against Barcelona and Salernitana, Barella also showed his goalscoring prowess, and Di Canio feels that this is no coincidence.

“If you’re not constantly moaning to your teammates, then you can actually be more focused in front of goal,” he said of the midfielder, “and he has found two brilliant goals.”

“Now they don’t seem to have that negative mentality,” he said of Inter as a whole.”

“[Against Salernitana] we saw that desire and hunger that had been lacking before.”
