Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella feels that it’s not important at the moment whether he become club captain.

Speaking to the media at the Gran Gala dal Calcio, as reported by FCInterNews, the 25-year-old emphasized that right now Samir Handanovic is the rightful captain, and that he’s not thinking much about the armband.

Barella is one of the players who is seen as a candidate to inherit the captain’s armband whenever Handanovic leaves the Nerazzurri.

There are a few players within the team who could realistically become captain on the basis of their leadership roles in the squad.

With current captain Handanovic having dropped to the bench in recent matches, Milan Skriniar has worn the armband.

Meanwhile, the likes of Marcelo Brozovic, Danilo D’Ambrosio, and Lautaro Martinez have also had temporary captaincy in Handanovic’s absence.

Asked if it’s something he’s thinking about, Barella replied that “At the moment I don’t care, there are guys who have been at Inter for longer than me and have fought more.”

“Handanovic has a big place in the club’s history, he is still the captain,” he added.

Asked about his friendship with fellow midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, Barella said that “He’s a good guy, he likes having fun and brings a balance of lightheartedness and seriousness to the locker room.”

“We’ve spent a lot of time together and a great relationship has been created,” he added.

“We hope that we can continue, and to win more together.”
