Current Roma and former Inter coach Jose Mourinho feels that he formed a stronger bond with midfielder Dejan Stankovic at the Nerazzurri than with almost any other player.

Speaking in a press conference after the Giallorossi defeated Stankovic’s Sampdoria in Serie A yesterday, as reported by FCInterNews, Mourinho spoke very warmly of the former midfielder and current coach.

Mourinho spent just two seasons coaching Stankovic at Inter, but the two got along very well as the Serb became a key player along the route to the European treble under the coach.

Now, Stankovic is back in Italy as a coach, taking over Sampdoria who he is hoping to guide to Serie A safety after a bad start to the campaign.

The Serb’s first match was against former Nerazzurri teammate Thiago Motta’s Bologna side, a match which was drawn, and in his second ever outing as Blucerchiati coach he came up against his former coach Mourinho.

The Portuguese tactician said that “I don’t know if I was the first person to call him after he was appointed by Sampdoria, but I was certainly at least the second or third.”

He added that “My players are always special, but he’s special among the specials, because the relationship we had during the two years at Inter he goes beyond the usual between a coach and player.”
