Former Hellas Verona and Fiorentina midfielder Antonoo Di Gennaro feels that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi is backing the experience of Hakan Calhanoglu ahead of Kristjan Asllani.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, Di Gennaro gave the view that he hopes Asllani has not lost the coach’s trust with his error in front of goal against Barcelona, and also noted that the coach seems to have decisively chosen Calhanoglu for the regista position.
Asllani had been expected to be the player who would be the primary backup to Marcelo Brozovic at Inter this season.
With the Croat having been out since the September international break with an injury, an early test of Asllani’s capacity to fill in for him has emerged.
The Albanian put in a solid performance against Roma despite the team losing, but ever since then it has primarily been Calhanoglu who has played at the base of a midfield trio for the Nerazzurri.
Di Gennaro praised the 28-year-old, stating that “The Turk is a complete midfielder, he has passing, dribbling, pace, he can play very well in that role.”
He went on that “I would not like to see Asllani’s error against Barcelona to cause issues for him.”
“Perhaps Inzaghi doesn’t trust him at this moment in time, and Calhanolgu has been the right answer in that position.”
“Right now Inzaghi wants a more experienced player in that part of the pitch,” he speculated.
