Serie A is third in Europe for attendances at football matches since the COVID-19 restrictions on capacities have been lifted.
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, who report that the Italian top flight is behind only the Premier League and the Bundesliga, as there has been a real enthusiasm for a return to stadiums.
For more than a season, all Italian teams had to play in front of empty stadiums due to efforts to control the spread of COVID, and then last campaign fans were allowed back in stadiums but at initially restricted capacities.
Over the course of last season, the capacity restrictions were gradually lessened.
Then, in April, the restrictions were lifted entirely, so that Italian teams are able to play in front of unrestricted crowds.
Since this period, the enthusiasm has been high, and Inter have enjoyed multiple sellout crowds at the San Siro.
As La Repubblica note, the attendances in Serie A have been behind only the English and German top flights during the period.
