Italian media argue that referee Paolo Valeri had to deal with a complicated Fiorentina-Inter on Saturday.

Italian media argued that Paolo Valeri did not make his life easier based on the decision he made during Saturday’s Fiorentina-Inter.

“It was a complicated game for Valeri, as by the 30th min, he had to concede a penalty kick for Fiorentina that was scored by Cabral.

The challenge by Dimarco on Bonventura was a dangerous one with the studs faced up on [Bonventura’s] knee, even though the Fiorentina player already followed through with his shot.

“It was right to give the penalty,” the Gazzetta dello Sport reported in today’s print edition of their analysis of Inter’s win over Fiorentina via FCInter1908.it.

However, the Italian newspaper argues that Inter could have had a red card because of the dangerous challenge from Dimarco on Bonaventura.

“The Nerazzurro player could have had a red card, based on the robustness of the challenge. Instead, Valeri gave no card, which is unexplainable because he watched it on the VAR monitor,” continued the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The penalty given against Terracciano was correct. The goalkeeper touched the ball, but clattered against Lautaro. VAR correctly ruled the play onside.

“Dzeko pushed Milenkovic with his forearm during the play prior to the goal to make it 3-4,” concluded the Italian newspaper.

Paolo Valeri has arbitrated 4 games in Serie A and has handed out 21 yellow cards so far this season. The Roman referee has awarded 2 penalty kicks in Serie A this season.

Valeri has refed Inter twice this season and has given the Nerazzurri a total of 7 yellow cards.

Inter beat Fiorentina 4-3 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday, as Lautaro Martinez scored a brace and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored the game-winner in the final minutes of the game to secure the three points.

The Nerazzurri face off against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday at the San Siro at 18:45 CET in the UEFA Champions League. A win in this game will secure qualification in the Round of 16.
