Italian journalist Matteo Marani feels that Inter’s contract extension talks with defender Milan Skriniar could be resolved more easily if the team’s progression to the Champions League knockouts is secured.
Speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Marani noted how a victory against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday could affect things for the Nerazzurri’s discussions with the 27-year-old.
Extending Skriniar’s priority so that the defender cannot leave on a free transfer at the end of the current season is a major priority for Inter.
The Slovakian will have to be convinced to stay despite the very public interest of French giants Paris Saint-Germain in bringing him to the French capital.
The Nerazzurri will have to find agreement with Skriniar on a financial level as well as in terms of the competitiveness of the team’s project.
In both respects, qualification for the Champions League knockout rounds could be a highly significant breakthrough.
“If Inter win on Wednesday it will be the second consecutive season reaching the Champions League knockouts, which will be a significant result for the team and also for Inzaghi,” Marani said.
“Getting to the knockouts would also be financially significant,” he continued, “it could be the thing that unlocks the contract talks with Skriniar.”
