Legendary former Nerazzurri defender Beppe Bergomi feels that Inter’s 4-3 win over Fiorentina was evidence that a turning point has taken place for the team.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Bergomi compared the result to matches where the Nerazzurri had dropped points earlier on in the campaign, and hailed the spirit shown by the team to turn a difficult evening into a victory.
Inter hardly had it all their own way against an organized and physical La Viola team at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday.
The Nerazzurri squandered a 2-0 lead, and then again with a 3-2 advantage, and heading into stoppage time it looked as though the Nerazzurri would have to settle for a draw.
However, the Inter players showed that they didn’t know when they were beaten to grab a dramatic late winner.
This was exactly the kind of moment that the players had failed to produce in losses earlier in the campaign like those against Lazio, Udinese, and Roma.
“Inter won the match 4-3, whereas they would have lost a month ago,” Bergomi said of the match.
“They’re now a team who can come back as a team when they face difficulties, they’re scoring goals again.”
He continued that “A lot of pressure is put on the midfielders to maintain consistency over an hour, it’s a very demanding role that requires two similar midfielders.”
Bergomi continued to analyze, “Under Conte, Inter were a totally concrete team, while under Inzaghi we’ve seen them play better football but also have a tougher time in the defensive phase, I think Inter currently have the fourteenth best defense in Serie A.”
“The team is struggling to maintain the defensive line,” he noted, “this season Inter have conceded many similar goals through crosses from their left side, it’s a situation where they’re getting punished repeatedly.”
