Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana feels that captain Samir Handanovic has had a very positive influence on his development at the Nerazzurri.

Speaking to Amazon Prime ahead of the Nerazzurri’s Champions League clash with Viktoria Plzen, the 26-year-old spoke about his relationship with the Nerazzurri captain, and noted that he has received a lot of advice from the more experienced keeper.

Onana and Handanovic are competing for the starting spot in goal at Inter.

The former arrived in the summer from Ajax as the designated long-term successor to the latter.

However, this does not mean that the two are not ultimately pushing in the same direction and for the good of the team.

Part of the reason that Handanovic has remained at the club whilst Onana has settled in has been so that he could give the Cameroonian a more experienced perspective, having been Inter’s starting keeper for a decade.

“He’s the captain and gives me a lot of advice,” he said of Handanovic.

“He’s not exactly the model for me, because as goalkeepers we’re completely different, but we’re colleagues and friends and I’m happy to receive his advice.”

And when asked about the success of his accurate long ball as an attacking weapon, Onana replied that “Credit has to go to the forwards, they vary up the game with their runs and give me the possibility of going more vertical with my passes.”
