Inter wingback Federico Dimarco feels that the Nerazzurri have proved many of their doubters wrong by achieving qualification for the Champions League knockouts from a difficult group.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the Nerazzurri’s 4-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen to secure a place in the knockouts, the 24-year-old hailed the team’s effort to get out of the Champions League “group of death.”

The Nerazzurri will not have felt that they had an easy road when they drew a Champions League group containing the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

An opening day defeat at the hands of Bayern made things look even tougher, whilst the injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Marcelo Brozovic added further hurdles.

However, four points against Barcelona and two wins over Plzen have seen Dimarco and his teammates reach the round of sixteen of Europe’s top competition for the second season in a row.

“We took to the pitch with the right approach, without blinking in the face of the opposition,” he said of the match.

“We kept attacking.”

“This was a very important step for us in the toughest group of the Champions League,” he continued.

Dimarco noted that “Few believed that we could do it, and so we’re happy – we showed growth as a team, we always remained compact and we beat Barcelona.”

He added that “On a personal level, I’m doing well, and then the more you play, the more confidence you gain.”
