Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that the team have done their job by hitting the first important milestone of the season in the Champions League.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia after the Nerazzurri’s 4-0 win over Viktoria Plzen, the coach congratulated his teammates for the important victory.
Inter have now reached the knockout stages of the Champions League for the second time in as many seasons.
Inzaghi has managed to guide the Nerazzurri to the round of sixteen with a match to spare in both of his seasons in charge now.
This is made even more impressive when the group that Inter had drawn themselves into is taken into consideration.
The Nerazzurri were handed what many consider to be the “group of death” in the form of a group containing Bayern Munich and Barcelona, but they showed all their quality to repeat last season’s feat.
“I’m happy for the players, the club, and for these wonderful fans,” the coach said.
“After the draw we weren’t very happy, but there was hope.”
“This was our first objective for the season, and we achieved it,” Inzaghi continued.
“We’ve gotten there for two seasons in a row, after it had been a long time for Inter,” he added.
“Today we had everything to lose, but the team did very well on the pitch, playing with order and precision.”
He noted that “These matches are difficult, we’ve suffered in the past, but this evening we showed maturity as we knew that we couldn’t let this opportunity slip away.”
And of the Nerazzurri’s Serie A campaign, Inzaghi said that “We’re behind, but we want to catch up in the table.”
