Inter CEO Beppe Marotta feels that current Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi has already made a big contribution to the club’s history and legacy.
Speaking in a press conference following the club’s annual shareholders’ meeting, via the Nerazzurri’s official site, Marotta hailed the work already done by the 46-year-old, as well as the future he can have with the club.
Inzaghi was appointed as Inter coach during a tumultuous period for the club.
The Nerazzurri had parted ways with Scudetto-winning coach Antonio Conte, and were also expected to make significant sales in the summer to meet financial targets.
Despite this, Inzaghi guided Inter to Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana trophies in his first campaign in this charge.
Moreover, the former Lazio boss brought Inter back to the Champions League group stage after more than a decade away, something which he has repeated in his second campaign in charge.
The 46-year-old has the chance to continue building a significant legacy at Inter, with the aim now to try and come back in the Serie A table and go one better than last season’s second place finish.
“All decisions at Inter are shared among all the directors,” Marotta said of the decision to appoint Inzaghi to replace Conte.
“Conte wrote an important chapter in our history, giving the team a new winning mentality.”
“Inzaghi has also immediately written a chapter of his own, with two trophies won already,” he continued.
“Our winning path continues, we made our choice with him in 2021 because we know that he has the right qualities.”
Marotta had no doubts, stating that “The facts show that he’s got us on an incredible journey, we’re back on the right path under him.”
Of the Inter squad members currently in the final seasons of their respective deals, Marotta said that “We have eight players whose contracts are up next summer, but this doesn’t scare us.”
“We’re dealing with completely consummate professionals,” he continued.
“Sporting rationales and personal details can lead us to make different choices,” he said of the players whose contracts expire at the end of June 2023, “but they all deserve to be extended based on what they’ve given to this team.”
“We will address everything in due time,” Marotta said.
“There are different situations which each have different evaluations, we’ll take great care in making decisions.”
As far as the prospects of the Nerazzurri in the transfer market for the future, Marotta said that “The President explained that any offers that come in must be seriously considered, and approached the foresight.”
“The situation that Italian football finds itself in has changed,” the CEO continued, “we’re working towards the concept of sustainability.”
“There has been some regression in terms of our football on a financial and economic level,” Marotta reflected.
“In football it’s not quite as simple as the more you spend, the more you win,” he stressed.
The CEO argued that “Competence is fundamental.”
“Inter have improved a lot off the pitch, in terms of our directors, and in all areas of the club.”
“It’s as though there’s an invisible team always surrounding the players, and that gives a boost to the entire club,” he suggested.
“This Nerazzurri project is ambitious,” Marotta emphasized, “we’re aware that we want to try and reach the top in all competitions in which we pariticpate.”
“As far as our current situation, in the January transfer window we will only be using it to augment the team a bit if at all,” he added.
Regarding the situation of Italian football in the transfer market, Marotta said that “We’re chasing after players who have demands that are too high compared to what the clubs are able to reach financially.”
“I believe that every player should have a sense of responsibility,” he went on, “but we often deal with agents or intermediaries who have their own interests.”
“Inter have a sense of responsibility to have a strong scouting department and to develop players for the future, this activity is vital for us.”
