Former Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic was given a hero’s reception as the Sampdoria coach brought his side to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Serie A yesterday.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serb was at the centre of adulation from Inter supporters in the stadium throughout the match, as the Nerazzurri defeated his team 3-0.

Stankovic established himself as a hugely successful and popular figure at Inter during a spell from 2004 to 2013, as he won the Serie A title five times, in addition to four Coppa Italia triumphs and the Champions League.

Keen to show their appreciation to him, Inter sang his name as he led his Sampdoria team out to warm up before the match, whilst the Curva Nord unveiled a banner reading: “Yesterday, today, and forever, Dejan is one of us.”

Similarly, as the teams were being announced prior to kick-off, Stankovic was celebrated.

“Respect and gratitude for those who have honoured our shirt, welcome back to San Siro Dejan Stankovic,” the stadium announcer declared.

Inter ran out victors courtesy of goals from Stefan De Vrij, Nicolo Barella, and Joaquin Correa.
