Inter midfielder Nicolo Barella has revealed that he was inspired as a footballer by Nerazzurri legend and current Sampdoria coach Dejan Stankovic, after scoring against his side.

The Italy international netted a wonderful goal to help Inter to all three points in the Serie A clash at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza yesterday evening, in between efforts from Stefan De Vrij and Joaquin Correa.

In an interview with Italian television broadcaster DAZN, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, the former Cagliari midfielder revealed the impact Stankovic had him, after the pair embraced on the side of the pitch at the final whistle.

“He didn’t say anything much, we hugged, but he knows very well what it means to me,” Barella stated.

“I can only wish him good luck for this new adventure, I hope the best for him and he hopes the best for us, that’s for sure.

“He is the player I was inspired by the most, today it was definitely a special hug,” the 25-year-old declared.

Inter have come into form in recent weeks and Barella felt that they were picking up the results that their performances deserved, whilst revealing that he was yet to watch his stunning goal back after the game.

“Playing well comes with the security we have found, which we lacked at the beginning of the year for several reasons.

“It’s nice to play with this quality, this desire and this attitude.

“I will watch the goal at home with my family. All the goals were created with our play, apart from the one from the corner, when there is this enthusiasm it is easier to play so we have to continue like this.”

The Sardinian midfielder has proven himself to be prolific from midfield but was unable to pinpoint why, other than the support of his Inter teammates.

“Maybe there is more peace of mind even in front of the goal, my teammates are giving me this opportunity and I can only thank them and help them with their performances,” he added.
