Referee Luca Massimi made the correct decision not to award Inter a penalty in their 3-0 win over Sampdoria, but his performance was mixed according to Italian media.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Massimi made the right call in waving away Federico Dimarco’s claims for a spot kick midway through the first half after he was challenged by Alex Ferrari.

The Inter wing-back had already struck the ball and crashed into the Sampdoria defender though, despite the Nerazzurri being awarded a penalty for a similar incident against Fiorentina last weekend.

Massimi was also adjudged to have been right not to show Gerard Yepes a second yellow card for a foul on Nicolo Barella, and a decision to send him off would have been considered unduly harsh.

However, the Molise native was criticised for being lenient in some second half challenges, with Manolo Gabbiadini only shown a yellow card for a heavy challenge on Hakan Calhanoglu.

Ronaldo Vieira was also considered to have gotten away with a cynical tackle on Lautaro Martinez late on, and the referee was awarded a rating of 6.5 by the newspaper.
