Former Juventus and Bologna midfielder Giancarlo Marocchi has been very impressed with how Hakan Calhanoglu has been playing at the base of Inter’s midfield in recent matches.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Marocchi gave a glowing review of how the current Nerazzurri midfield has functioned at protecting the backline.

On paper, the Inter midfield containing Calhanoglu as the regista of the trio is a makeshift unit.

The Turk has been given the responsibility of filling in for the injured Marcelo Brozovic, but certainly did not go into the season seen as a natural candidate in this role.

However, Calhanoglu’s displays have been outstanding, as have those of the entire midfield who have worked very well at protecting the back three.

Earlier in the season, the lack of real midfield protection had left the defenders exposed and struggling, but in the last few matches Calhanoglu as well as Nicolo Barella have really stepped up on both sides of the ball.

“Barella and the other two midfielders have started to protect the defense,” Marocchi said.

“The difference has been made by the team in the locker room, and also in terms of physical improvements.”

He argued that “Calhanoglu’s been brilliant in front of the defense.”

“After they reached the Champions League knockouts, the league is not the only goal for Inter,” Marocchi suggested.
