Italian journalist Paolo Condo feels that the form of Federico Dimarco and Hakan Calhanoglu has given Inter coach Simone Inzaghi a lot of thinking to do about the team.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, Condo noted how the duo’s form has introduced real competition for places, whilst Andre Onana has also given the Nerazzurri something different in goal.

Dimarco had not necessarily started the season widely expected to be first-choice, either in the backline or on the wing.

However, some standout displays at wingback have seemingly made the 24-year-old a key weapon for Inzaghi and the Nerazzurri.

Calhanoglu, meanwhile, is certainly a player who was anticipated to have a key role to play for this season.

However, in the 28-year-old’s case, it is the role that he’s played that has been unexpected, as he has filled in for Marcelo Brozovic so well at the base of midfield that it is not absolutely obvious that the Croat will get his place back when he returns from injury.

“Inter are going through the best moment of their season because Inzaghi’s reaction to the crisis situation has been steadfast,” Cndo writes, “he’s stuck with Onana and Dimarco until they’ve become starters, and in Calhanoglu he’s found a solution to Brozovic’s absence.”

“Now he has to ask himself which of the two trios in midfield is better, or decide from match to match,” he continues, “but coaches are always lying with a bit of a smile when they say that being spoilt for choice like this is entirely a good problem to have.”
