Inter striker Romelu Lukaku had been a target for Bayern Munich during the summer transfer window as they searched for a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the 29-year-old had been on the Bavarians’ radar before he eventually returned to Inter on loan from Chelsea.

Lukaku will not get the opportunity to face Bayern this evening due to injury, having also missed the previous meeting with the German champions this season through injury.

According to the Gazzetta, the Belgian could very well have been on the other side of this evening’s Champions League group stage clash.

Bayern had been in search for a striker following the loss of Lewanodwski who was sold to Barcelona in the summer.

In the end, the Bavarians decided to sign Sadio Mane from Liverpool rather than targeting a more conventional Number Nine.

However, according to the Gazzetta Bayern had been considering a move for Lukaku from Chelsea, although the player ended up returning to the Nerazzurri instead.
