Inter striker Lautaro Martinez must be more clinical and decisive in front of goal, particularly if Romelu Lukaku is out of the team.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who noted how the lack of a cutting edge from the Argentine has become a problem for the team when they cannot rely on Lukaku.
Martinez had looked to have put his eight-match goalscoring drought behind him when he found the back of the net four times in three matches last month.
The 25-year-old announced his return with a goal and an assist against Barcelona in a vital 3-3 Champions league draw, and looked all set to keep the momentum going.
However, with four matches now started without finding the back of the net, the questions about Martinez’s reliability as a goalscorer are once again at the forefront.
In the view of the Corriere, the Argentine’s profligacy with two good chances in the Nerazzurri’s 2-0 loss to Juventus were an illustration of exactly the limitations that he places on the team’s attack.
When Martinez’s strike partner Lukaku is in the lineup, the Belgian can certainly bring the goals so that the team does not suffer from Martinez’s periods without scoring, and can benefit from other facets of his game.
However, when Lukaku is missing, as he has been for much of this season through injury, the spotlight is shone on the fact that, as of yet, Martinez has yet to really prove himself as an outlet for goals.
