Legendary former Inter striker Sandro Mazzola feels that the differences in the Nerazzurri’s fortunes in the league and in Europe come down to a differing approach tactically.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, the former striker argued that in Serie A the Nerazzurri are not as able to play as open football as in the Champions League due to the differing approaches.

Inter’s form in Serie A has not been what they’ll have hoped for at the start of the season, with their defeat away to Juventus making it five losses in total in the league since the start of the campaign.

However, in the Champions League it has been a different story, as the Nerazzurri have impressed to qualify for the knockout rounds from a very difficult group.

This is a discrepancy that many have noted, and Mazzola gave his thoughts on why it could be the case.

“The players aren’t doing too badly,” he said, “they actually do better in the Champions League than in the league.”

He suggested that this is “Because in Italy, coaches know how to cancel out their opponents.”

“At the international level the focus is more on playing proactively, and Inzaghi has that kind of approach.”
