Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic is unlikely to immediately return to the starting line-up against Atalanta tomorrow, but is in line for the captaincy after the World Cup break.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Croatia international is back to fitness after a thigh injury, having made his return against Juventus last weekend, and is pushing for a place in Simone Inzaghi’s team.

However, the coach is thought to be unlikely to make many changes in the final game of the year before the World Cup break, and Hakan Calhanoglu’s impressive form, especially in Wednesday’s 6-1 demolition of Bologna, will see the Turkey star retain his place deep in midfield.

Despite this, Brozovic remains a key part of Inzaghi’s plans and he will be restored to the team fully after his World Cup commitments, whilst there may be an additional responsibility handed to him.

With goalkeeper Samir Handanovic now benched in favour of Andre Onana, the Inter captain’s armband is now expected to be handed to Brozovic.
