Inter coach Simone Inzaghi would extend the contract of Bosnian international striker Edin Dzeko past this season if the decision lay with him.

The Nerazzurri coach underlined that as much as he would like to keep the former Manchester City striker, the decision to do so lay with the club’s directors when speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN, as reported via FcInterNews, immediately after the Serie A win against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium.

“I absolutely expected a season like the one Edin is having. He is a great player who helps the team in both phases of play, he offered a great added value and still does.

“I would absolutely extend his contract but these questions are not ones you should be asking me, I have great directors with expert knowledge who know what the best thing to do is.

“The last two matches our approach was wrong, today we played against a great Atalanta side, we suffered a lot in the opening 25 minutes, then we equalized and things went better from that point on.

“It is an important win, our sixth win in our last seven. We have to continue like this like the other teams that are on our trails.

“Last season at this point we had 34 points with a few less goals conceded, and we were third behind Napoli and AC Milan.

“The league is going in a different direction for everyone except for Napoli, where everyone including us, have had slip-ups.

“Of our last seven games we’ve won six , we have to continue like this. We know that coming to Bergamo is never easy, we’ve overcame many hurdles today.

“Today we conceded two goals. I prefer to concede when your opponent creates dangerous plays. The first was from a penalty that should never have been conceded and the second from a corner.

“Usually we approach these games better but we didn’t do that against Bologna and Atalanta. Today credit should be given to Atalanta who matched us man for man all over the pitch. We were slow and committed technical errors.

“I would like to replay all the five matches we lost. Last season we had four draws and one defeat, this is the main difference with respect to last season.”

Edin Dzeko scored a brace against Atalanta to win 3-2, bringing his tally in the Serie A to six and nine overall in all competitions so far this season which saw Inter finally win away against a direct rival this season.

Dzeko joined Inter in the summer of 2021 signing a two year deal which is set to expire at the end of June 2023 and has so far featured 70 times for the Nerazzurri scoring 26 goals in the process.

The Nerazzurri have lost to Lazio, AC Milan, Udinese and Juventus away from home in the Serie A as well as Roma at the San Siro in early October so today’s win over Atalanta was a long awaited one against a direct rival.
