Inter defender Francesco Acerbi has said that it is important for the Nerazzurri to beat Atalanta so that they can stay high in the Serie A table, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking during an interview with Inter TV, via FCInternews, ahead of the match in Bergamo, the Italian defender stressed the importance of getting all three points at the Gewiss Arena before the break for the World Cup.

The players are keen to spend the World Cup break knowing that they have just won a big game and have something to build on when the play resumes at the end of December.

“It’s important to win to stay up there because this year we still haven’t won against a top team. We want to do it to go on holiday or to the national team feeling calm.

“Obviously we are Inter and we must absolutely look for continuity by winning here, because it is fundamental to keep climbing up the table,” said the former Lazio player before taking the field.

Inter have not had the start to the season that many expected having lost five games in the opening 14. Wins against the top sides in the league have also proved elusive so beating Atalanta would be a big deal.

Speaking on the quality of the opponent, Francesco Acerbi said: “We know they come from two consecutive defeats, they are at home and aggressive.

“They will definitely want, like us, to finish the year well. It will be a very physical game, whoever has more mental strength and will want to win will bring home the result.”
