Legendary former Inter midfielder Evaristo Beccalossi feels that compared to modern teams, the Nerazzurri side of the 1979-80 Serie A title win was a more tight-knit group.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in today’s print edition, via FCInterNews, Beccalossi noted that the Nerazzurri had a strong presence of youth team representatives at that time compared to today.

Inter do have one first-team regular who came through the youth academy this season in the form of Federico Dimarco.

Moreover, Italian players like Nicolo Barella, Alessandro Bastoni, Danilo D’Ambrosio, and Matteo Darmian have shown a strong commitment to the Nerazzurri cause.

Foreign players such as Lautaro Martinez, Milan Skriniar, and Samir Handanovic among many others have also showed no lack of passion or connection with the club and the fans.

Still, as Beccalossi points out, the team must be built up of all these disparate individuals now, whereas in decades past it was a more organic group formed through the youth academy.

“That season the only players who were actually signed to the club were me and Pasinato, along with Fontolan and Serena, while the summer before the title win saw Mozzini, Caso and Pancheri arrive,” he looked back.

“The rest were all players from the youth academy like Bordon, Bini, and Oriali.”

“Nowadays it’s more like squads are made up of 24 different individuals, and so the coaches and directors have to do a good job of forming everyone into a group pushing in the same direction,” he added.
