Inter centre-back Stefan De Vrij could be released by the club at the end of the season, with the Nerazzurri not convinced by his form sufficiently to offer a new contract.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of Il Giorno, the Netherlands international has caused alarm at the club due to a sustained spell of indifferent form, and coach Simone Inzaghi is losing trust in him.

With De Vrij’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Nerazzurri coach has opted for the more reliable Francesco Acerbi in his preferred starting line-up and the Dutchman may be cut loose in the summer.

De Vrij was named Serie A’s best defender two seasons ago, but has committed numerous mistakes and suffered questionable form since, with his most recent outing against Atalanta seeing him concede a penalty.

Added to this is De Vrij’s high wages, with the 30-year-old securing a substantial salary after joining on a free transfer from Lazio in 2018.

With Inter looking to reduce expenditure, it is believed that De Vrij is unlikely to be offered new terms and the Nerazzurri will instead cut their losses.
